Dressage was developed by the Greeks to bring
movements to military horses and riders that
would help them attack or evade the enemy.
The earliest written work about training horses
was produced by Xenophon, a Greek military
commander. This written document was built on by
the military to further horsemanship skills, a
key ingredient of military training of the time.
The Renaissance saw European aristocrats
displaying highly trained horses in special
equestrian pageants. Dressage is French for
training. As a result of the training
systems developed by European riding masters,
the Imperial Spanish Riding School of Vienna was
established in 1572. This school still operates
today and is home to the famous Lipizzaner
Stallion shows and almost all horse lovers have
this destination on their bucket list.
The riding principles developed and taught here
are still followed in today's dressage world.
Dressage become an Olympic Sport in the 1912 Olympic
Games in Stockholm but only commissioned military
officers were allowed to compete until 1952 when the
rules changed to allow both civilian men and women
